[atrb=style,background-color: transparent,bTable] hey guys. my name is raquel esmeralda alyse romero, but you can call me raq, esme or esmeralda. everyone else does, so i guess you can too. i'm twenty years young, and if it isn't already obvious, i'm a female. it should be. what isn't so obvious is the fact that i'm a precognitive psychic, but you can keep that a secret for now. |
personality
Raquel is certainly an interesting character, that's for damn sure. Having grown up as a Gitano in Barcelona, Spain, she's a lot different from your average psychic. Her Calé group was a traditional one, following most of the old laws. Still, for a traditional Romany group, they were more laid back, and some laws they ignored. Such as the homosexuality law. Growing up in this atmosphere made Raq a slightly more rebellious girl, with a flare for performing. Something about the singing, the music, and especially the Flamenco dancing makes her blood burn with a Spanish passion. Because, let's be honest here, no one dances the Flamenco with as much passion as the Roma do. Like most Gypsies, Raquel loves to party. She especially loves Zambras, which is a sort of Flamenco party or show. Like most Gitanos, she believes it is okay to con the Payos, or non-Roma, out of money, although she doesn't do it often.
Raquel has a fiery, abrasive personality and with her rebellious streak and anger issues, not everyone can handle her. Raquel doesn't trust easily, especially not the Gadjes, the Non-Roma, and doesn't let many insiders in. Raq is also a little arrogant, but then again, a lot of Romany are. They tend to think that they are a different class than the Payos, they are a better class. Back hundreds of years ago, they weren't even allowed to marry out of the Roma. That has changed for her clan, at least, but she still can't help but believe that the Romany are better, even if it's only a little bit. She keeps these feelings to herself though.
Raquel is a very talented singer, and it would be hard to believe that such a sweet and soft voice comes for such a fiery personalitied, independent young woman. Like most, her clan believes you must be a virgin before marriage, and that nakedness unless among children or when she's alone with a husband is taboo. Raquel wouldn't even be caught dead around an elder with her legs showing, as it is a disgrace and disrespectful. Now, that doesn't mean she always wears floor length dresses, quite the opposite in fact. Among Non-Roma, she couldn't care less, as long as all the necessities are covered, she doesn't care. Raquel is highly religious, but she follows the Romany beliefs, which closely mirrors the bible. Now, a lot of the bible she doesn't agree with, so she sort of picks and chooses what she follows and what she doesn't. For example, blasphemy and cursing elders is a sin, and that her people don't follow non-Roma laws, only the Romany court can judge her people. The Romany court is known as the Kris.
Raquel is a very spirited girl, and she is also highly intelligent. Because her family is the "leader" of their particular group, Raquel is one of the few who went to school, and learned to read and write. As such she is quite proud of her skills, and her family never fails to show off her talents. The Roma are proud people, after all.
When it comes to other races, she judges them as she would judge a Roma or a Non-Roma. Romany people come from all races; human, Fae, Psychic, Witch, Vampire, Werewolf, Shifter or Hunter (they do not believe in ghosts as a race). Although, Humans, Fae, Psychics and especially Witches are most common among the Roma, they are treated equally, unless they belong to the Kris. In that case, they are treated above all others, because that is the way of the Roma; All Calé are equal, and above the Payos. However, right now the Gypsies, including Raquel, sort of resent Vampires. Why? Because the Calé are highly secretive people and to just come out to the media, to tell them what you are, is seen as an insult. It is also, in Raquel's opinion, a way of saying that they are better than her people, which angers her, so she isn't that big of a fan of Vampires. She sees them as showy and ostentatious. It's much better to be quiet, secretive and mysterious, in her opinion.
history
Raquel was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1991. She had a very large family, as most of her kind did, and she grew up, knowing she was different from everyone else. See, she wasn't a Gadje as her people called them, she was a Gitano, a Calé. In other words, she was a true Roma gypsy. As such, she always felt she was better. Like most Romany people, Raquel kept her Ethnic identity a secret, despite traveling in a caravan around Spain. Her family was quite important among her people, so she was a lucky enough to go to school. However the constant traveling that is required of a gypsy made schooling difficult, and it seemed that every few months she was in a new school, in a new city. Not that it really mattered to her, she was used to being different from others. When Raquel was 14, she began developing her gifts. Although there were some Witches among her particular clan, there were very very few psychics. Most of them were human. So her clan were quite delighted to discover that she had the gifts of Precognition. When Raquel was seventeen she dropped out of school to practice the art of precognition more in depth, and she became pretty well known among Spain as a seer.
When Raquel was 19, she and some of her clan finally decided to branch out and move to America. She felt that something was going to happen soon, so she moved to Jamerson Falls, New Jersey. She was right, as per usual. This was around the time the Vampires declared themselves to the public. Raquel watched them with scorn; How dare they announce their 'superiority' to the world, making them seem better than the mysterious, secretive and alluring Roma? How dare they?
Now at 20, Raquel continues to work as a Seer, and although she speaks english quite fluently, her Spanish accent is quite strong. She wouldn't have it any other way, after all there is quite the Gitano culture here, now. Because family is always important to the Roma. Always.[/div]
